Six men shot at Akron party
Six people were shot early Saturday after a fight broke out at party on Sherman Street near the University of Akron. Police did not know whether the victims are UA students or affiliated with the university. The victims’ wounds were not life-threatening, Akron police Lt. Rick Edwards said Saturday.Six men from Cuyahoga County were charged with aggravated rioting after their vehicle was stopped near the site of the shooting in the 600 block of Sherman Street. The car matched descriptions given by 911 callers. A loaded gun was found in the vehicle, but it was not known whether it was used in the shooting or whether any of the men arrested fired the shots, Edwards said.Edwards said the shooting occurred shortly after midnight after a fight broke out at a party with about 100 people — mostly men — and some of the combatants were asked to leave.“A couple minutes later, a male returned and fired several shots into the crowd,” he said.None of those shot or arrested lived at the house, which is just north of Voris Street.Edwards said police had not responded to any prior incidents at the house. The shooting victims are all men 18 to 41 years old, police said. Their names were not released, but police said three are from Akron, two from Cleveland and one from Warrensville Heights.Edwards said the men were all shot in the lower half of their bodies — their buttocks or legs. At least one showed up at an area hospital with a gunshot wound.Charged with aggravated rioting and booked into the Summit County Jail were Cordell J. Midgett-Crosby, 20, of Miramar Boulevard, Cleveland; Adrian L. Simmons, 20, of East 173rd Street, Cleveland; Frank J. Clardy, 20. of Colony Road, South Euclid; Darrel K. Crosby Jr., 20, of Ellison Road, South Euclid; Lovell C. White, 23, of Ingleside Road, Cleveland; and Arturo Norris, 23, of Bedford Heights.University and Akron police are still trying to determine what happened at the party, where alcohol was served.Edwards said that it was possible that people at the party were “affiliated with a fraternity, but it definitely wasn’t a frat house.”The six people arrested were not listed in a directory on UA’s website. University police and a spokeswoman for the school said Akron police would handle all questions about the investigation.Edwards said it was unclear what sparked the fight, which ended before the shooting. He did not know whether the victims were targeted individually.Betty Lin-Fisher can be reached at 330-996-3724 or blinfisher@thebeaconjournal.com.
