UPDATE: 4:30 p.m.Six people were shot early Saturday after a fight broke out at party near the University of Akron. Police do not know whether the victims are UA students or affiliated with the university. The victims’ injuries were not life threatening, Akron Police Lt. Rick Edwards said Saturday.Six people from Cleveland and Cleveland suburbs were arrested and charged with aggravated rioting after their vehicle, which matched descriptions given by 911 callers, was stopped near the site of the shooting, in the 600 block of Sherman Street.A loaded gun was found in the vehicle, Edwards said, but it was not known if it was used in the shooting or whether one of those arrested fired the shots.Edward said the shooting happened shortly after midnight after a fight broke out at party with about 100 people — mostly men — and some of the combatants were asked to leave.Witnesses said a car returned and the six people were shot by one person, Edwards said. The victims apparently were outside the Sherman Street house. None of those shot or arrested lived at the house, which is just north of Voris Street.Edwards said police had not responded to any prior incidents at the house. The shooting victims were men between the ages of 18 to 41 years old, reports said. Their names have not been released, but police said three of the victims were from Akron, two from Cleveland and one from Warrensville Heights.Edwards said the victims were all shot in their lower extremities —their buttocks, legs and shins. At least one of the victims showed up to an area hospital with a gunshot wound. Arrested for aggravated rioting and booked into the Summit County Jail were Cordell J. Midgett-Crosby, 20, of Miramar Boulevard in Cleveland; Adrian L. Simmons, 20, of East 173rd Street in Cleveland; Frank J. Clardy, 20. of Colony Road in South Euclid; Darrel K. Crosby, Jr., 20, of Ellison Road in South Euclid; Lovell C. White, 23, of Ingleside Road in Cleveland, and Arturo Norris, 23, of Bedford Heights.UA police and Akron police are still trying to determine what happened at the party, where alcohol was served, and whether any of the victims or those arrested are UA students. The six people arrested were not listed in an online directory at the UA’s website. University police and a spokeswoman for the school both said the Akron Police would be handling all questions regarding the investigation.Edwards said it was unclear what sparked the fight, which ended before shooting. Nor did he know if any of the shooting victims were targeted individually.Betty Lin-Fisher can be reached at 330-996-3724 or blinfisher@thebeaconjournal.com.
